There is generally not too much disparity between a good profile picture and reality that will be too much to your detriment, and a good pic at least gets you an "in". A poor picture on the other hand will do you no favours and probably won't even get you a reply, never mind a date.

I see what you are saying, but the "in" is only the first hurdle. I feel like its pointless because a poor picture wont get me past the first hurdle, but faking with a good picture will get me past the first but not the rest.

I'd also have to say that online pictures and reality can vary from person to person, but generally I feel like there's a lot of things that differ. Unlike in real life, in pictures you unconsciously adjust your face. You can see yourself and that way create the best perception of yourself. You can make your face seem more symmetric, put emphasis on stronger features, and distract from bad ones. In real life, you don't have access to that.

And from taking pics, you know the best angles for your face, and know which ones to try and avoid in person. And even a very good pic is going to look enough like you to not be a complete fake.

And remember- girls will always use the best poses with perfect hair and freshly applied make-up for the most part, so is not going to look exactly like her pics either.
