I'd assume both of you would feel awkward, with you having put your feelings out there and her rejecting them.

What it sounds like is happening is she's attempting to give very minor signals that she's not interested, he's not catching on, and so she's giving a more clear signal in a way that doesn't force either of you to be in an awkward spot. If you choose to continue to wallow in those feelings for her, that's your prerogative, but what you should be doing is accepting she's not interested and moving on.
