What actually happened was the southern strategy. Basically fuck nonwhites. Then when demographics are swinging out of republican favor (nonwhite and young and nonreligious) the republicans are trying to woo other races through shame tactics (“think for yourself” and “democratic plantation”) as if they didn’t spend the past few decades shitting on those minorities.

I live in the deep south. Yes technically they are republican and vote GOP now, but their attitudes are still VERY southern democrat. And they voted trump but they're all never-trumpers down here. I'm a real GOP voter (used to be a progressive democrat until the DEMs went full bore COMMUNIST) and am frustrated by my party. It like I never left the Democrats.
