I agree with your observation here. At some point in my early teens, I suddenly realized that it was absolutely horrifying that people would wish drawn-out torture and brutal death upon others, especially with such glee and excitement.

I don't agree. I don't think that anyone should be tortured or subjected to torturous conditions, no matter what they did. I'm not sure I even trust the concepts of "deserving" or "punishment." I realize that harmful crimes happen, but I think that if society amassed its brainpower and searched for new approaches, we could at the very least prevent quite a bit of violence and other harmful crime. It's not necessary to just let a problem fester until something bad happens, and then torture the perpetrator (I consider U.S. prison conditions to be torture).

This is almost true, but not quite. I don't know where you're from, but in U.S. society, it's generally considered OK to physically attack and emotionally manipulate children as ways of teaching them ("punishment"). So children don't quite receive the same protections. It's not considered OK to strike an adult just because you're frustrated with their behavior. It's considered OK to strike a little child for the same reason, though (despite the fact that the child is far, far more vulnerable, both in a legal and a developmental sense). And it's considered even more OK to emotionally manipulate them. Research shows this has harmful effects that carry over into adulthood, but we're still just scratching the surface on that one.

Some punishment is important, to a degree. But a fine, locking someone away from society for a time or the rest of their lives is good enough for both reasons, punishing a crime and ensuring the safety of others.
