Back in high school I volunteered at an abused women's shelter. Nowadays I don't really have the time, so I donate money to charity instead. I didn't notice any difference in my personal or other's perception of my worth - if anything, volunteering to help women only makes them more wary towards you.

Maybe cause you specifically went to women, who were abused (most likely by a man, because woman to woman is also not likely to end up in a shelter) As a man. So these women are more wary towards any man, because they are literally there because of being abused.. They are more wary of anyone. But since they are women, and you are a man, just like the abuser, it makes them extra wary. Cause of being abused.

Work already takes up my time. Besides if I went to go to a place like an animal shelter then people there would just get mad and tell me to "go back to your basement you virgin".

You don't sound like an asshole like a couple of your peers here but I can virtually guarantee no one at an animal rescue will tell you to go back to your basement. Many people involved in animal rescue have too much empathy. It can be a problem. I don't know if you've ever heard of the group "A Loving Goodbye" but they had to put a minimum age for their volunteers. No one can join unless they are 25 or older. Young people were killing themselves out of grief. The group goes to kill shelters and takes animals scheduled for euthanasia out to enjoy a day with treats and toys and love. It is such soul destroying grief doing it over and over again that younger people couldn't handle it. I tried it myself and I couldn't handle it and I'm almost 30. After 8 animals, 3 of which came home with me because I refused to take them back, I had to stop. I'm not even ashamed to admit I was crying hysterically every night.

My experience 100 percent goes against this, At my ugliest people would literally holler at me wherever I went. I have been screamed at in public for merely sitting in a public space while ugly.Whenever I left a space people would start talking about my face pretty much always(a good friend of mine confided this with me). People brought up my face in casual conversation pretty much every time.Woman who had seen me in a long time would start talking to themselves about how much uglier I had gottten.I have had people go "ewwwwww" at me. It is genuinely healthy to get into volunteering, especially if you don't have a job or a distraction currently. Just allowing yourself a routine where you are travelling and out of your house for a few hours a day is good for depression in general as it helps to give your brain some dopamine and adrenaline it's lacking. It can lift your mood if you're feeling low and giving you a chance to socialise in a non threatening environment is pretty nice too.

I volunteered at a monkey sanctuary in Thailand. Got to wake up every morning and bottle feed 13 baby monkeys and then spend the day grooming and socialising with them. It was 10/10 top notch. It started because I was going there every day and paying 400baht to see them. Eventually I got to know the owner and pretty much just negotiated free entry in exchange for my service. I would’ve gladly paid still! I love monkeys! I’m pretty sure most animal shelters, orphanages, children’s hospitals etc would be more than happy for volunteers to help out in any way you can.** Providing you are of good character and approach the situation properly...**

Joined a group of young people who would go around doing "good deeds" - helping lonely seniors with everyday stuff mostly. It did feel nice to be doing nice things for people, but it was also during one of those times when my loneliness and frustration were pretty high and the constant flirting and sexual tension between members of the group. Tension which, obviously, did not involve me in any way. Eventually that caused me to leave because I just couldn't keep doing that to myself.

I do a lot! It makes me feel better helping others, like my life is not a complete waste of LDAR. In fact, it means my life is even more meaningful than those loser IT cucks who just troll people on the internet to get their rocks off and don't make any real positive contributions to this world.
