Just fyi, I've never said (and believe) that women are not as capable as men. But because life in general is so easy for them, they have much less drive to succeed.

And because life is so easy, all achievements they get are much less worth than those of a man.

There's a whole lot of muddying factors - I mean, we teach young men that they have to be the breadwinner or else and that's their main function within the family unit, whereas women tend to be taught that there are more choices and they're more likely to be raised with child-bearing in mind, so it's hard to be fully bent on a driven career knowing the time off that will be necessary, etc.

As a woman who won't be having kids, I'm fine, but I totally see how in terms of 'drive' this stuff is socialised right from the beginning. It's impossible to tell how much is nature and nurture, all we can do is try to show both men and women that life is what you make of it. I'm happy to see lots of couples having a stay at home dad, or a stay at home mom, dependent on what works for /them/ as a couple rather than just immediately defaulting to the woman saying home. Sometimes the woman will make more, so it makes sense for her to be the breadwinner.

I think if we taught men that they have value beyond how much money they make (which I absolutely believe they do) and whether they can solely sustain a family, we'll see more of the flexibility that we currently see in women. It's not about 'unless you're driven to the point of desperation and obsession you'll fail!', it's more 'I could dedicate 60 hours a week to this job, or I could dedicate 40 and have more balance and happiness'. Currently more women are preferring the latter, likely due to the pressures of them raising the family or having other obligations (women are the vast majority of carers for elderly family members, often putting their jobs at the wayside for it).

Drive is great to have, but as with everything, moderation is key. And also I think it's important to note that 'success' is super subjective, and sometimes 'success' for many people means raising kids well, or volunteering a lot, or being financially stable, etc. It's not all about being the CEO come hell or high water.

I disagree about 'life being easier' for women, it's just... different. Some things are the same, like grades, but other things like having to juggle family and work, are naturally going to be more of a difficulty and burden placed on women to sort out.
